As a Patient Support Staff team member, you will provide safe transportation of mental health and/or substance abuse patients by use of motor vehicles. Patient Support Staff members provide bedside guardianship of mental health and/or substance abuse patient while patient is under court order or voluntary treatment within hospital/treatment center environment.

Specific Duties and Essential Functions




  • Provide bedside guardianship of mental health and/or substance abuse patient

  • Transport, by use of motor vehicle, of mental health and/or substance abuse patients

  • Monitor, supervise and control patient behavior during the operation of the observation center; or restrain by force if necessary and other restraints to prevent the elopement of the patient

  • Communicate effectively and coherently with hospital staff or patients with approved facility communication devices including the telephone system, intercom system, and portable or base radios; demonstrate effective communicative skills with detainees, public and hospital staff

Job Requirements

Education, Licenses and Certifications Required




  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent

  • Must be able to pass any state-required training or other qualifications for licensing

  • Must possess a current driver's license with no moving violations within the past three (3) years



Type and Length of Specific Experience Required




  • Must possess a minimum of two (2) years of service in public / private protective security or healthcare related fields



Skills Required




  • Must be willing and able to work flexible schedules

  • Must have access to reliable transportation

  • Must be able to operate radio or telephone equipment and/or console monitors

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Active listening skills

  • Ability to assess and evaluate situations effectively

  • Ability to identify critical issues quickly and accurately

  • Attention to detail

  • Must be at least 18 years old or the minimum age required by the state, if higher

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a foreign citizen authorized to legally work in the United States

  • Must not use illegal drugs. Must be able to pass a drug test with negative results (except when undergoing documented medical treatment).

  • Must submit to an extensive background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications, and Department of Motor Vehicle and credit checks if applicable

  • Must be able to provide, upon job offer, a DD214 discharge document with discharge status indicated, if prior military

  • Post offer, must be able to pass the following:

    • Crisis Intervention Team training as established through the National Alliance on Mental Illness

    • Successfully complete all training required for the position to include potential application of limited use of force or restraint of patient

Environment: Indoor and outdoor, temperature ranges from moderate to extreme cold and heat
Major activity: Walking, standing, speaking, listening, observing
Physical efforts to carry out job duties: Standing, walking, and sitting. Minimal to no stooping or kneeling.
